What is Aquatic Therapy?
Aquatic Physical Therapy is the evidence-based and skilled practice of physical therapy in an aquatic environment by a physical therapist or by a physical therapist assistant who is under the direction and supervision of a physical therapist. Aquatic Physical Therapy includes but is not limited to treatment, rehabilitation, prevention, health, wellness, and fitness of patient/client populations in an aquatic environment with or without the use of assistive, adaptive, orthotic, protective, or supportive devices and equipment.
The buoyancy, support, accommodating resistance and other unique properties of the aquatic environment enhance interventions for patients/clients across the age span with musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiovascular/pulmonary, and integumentary diseases, disorders, or conditions.
Aquatic Physical Therapy interventions are designed to improve or maintain:
• function
• aerobic capacity/endurance conditioning
• balance
• body mechanics and postural stabilization
• flexibility
• gait and locomotion
• relaxation
• muscle strength, power, and endurance
Why Choose Our Facility?
David Anselmo, PT, Owner of Cross Keys Physical Therapy believes that Aquatic Therapy is an excellent way to rehab injured patients. Exercise is the fountain of youth that everyone wants to drink. However, jogging, aerobic dance, running, and cross training has not proven to be good on our joints, muscles, tendons or ligaments. I am seeing more injuries from these types of activities everyday."
Aquatic Therapy is the use of Warm water at Therapeutic temperature between 90-94 degrees. The buoyancy of water facilitates exercise without the forces present with land-based programs.. At Cross Keys Physical Therapy our Aquatic Therapy Sessions are in a 20ft by 30 ft pool. Our Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants are in the water with the patients to instruct, stretch, massage and demonstrate to each patient as needed to reach individual goals.
The aquatic environment helps reduce inflammation and decreases pressure on an injured joint/spine column, allowing them to begin recovery and exercise much earlier and safer than land based therapy. “I am using Aquatic Therapy for, Post bone fractures, lumbar stenosis, bulging disc, herniated disc, Weight bearing problems secondary to injury, balance problems, coordination problems, swelling/edema problems, circulation problems, just to mention a few call my office to see if we call help you with your injury or rehab needs.” David B.
